The file sat on an old, dust-coated external hard drive labeled simply "raft-v1-04.rar". Leo had found it in his late uncle’s storage unit, wedged between a collection of vintage ham radios and stacks of handwritten notebooks filled with complex coordinates. Curiosity getting the better of him, Leo plugged the drive into his computer and extracted the archive.

Inside was an executable file from 2016, a pre-release alpha build of a survival game. When he launched it, there was no main menu, no options, and no credits. The screen simply faded in from black to reveal a character standing on a four-by-four grid of wooden planks, floating in an endless, procedurally generated ocean under a setting sun. The only tool in his inventory was a plastic hook tied to a length of rope.
