This domestic setting lends the album a unique, unbuttoned intimacy that reviewers at The New Yorker described as feeling like a "pleasurable evening at home" between two old friends. Kaufmann himself noted that the private atmosphere allowed them to get closer to the "zeitgeist" of these pieces, which were originally intended for intimate circles rather than large concert halls.
