The video file on his screen suddenly glitched, the audio erupting into a deafening screech of dial-up tones. A new notification popped up, overlaying the player:
Elias felt a chill. That was his kitchen. That was the same dent in the toaster from when he’d dropped it moving in. He looked down at his own hands, then back at the screen. The man on the screen mirrored his movements exactly.

On the video, the man turned around. It was Elias, but his eyes were hollowed out, replaced by shifting patterns of static. The "Video Elias" looked directly into the lens and held up a handwritten sign. It read:
The notification appeared at 3:14 AM:
Elias didn’t remember clicking a link. He didn’t recognize the hexadecimal string of the filename. But there it was, sitting in his downloads folder with a generic grey thumbnail. Curiosity, fueled by late-night insomnia, won over caution. He double-clicked.
In the frame, a man sat at the kitchen table, his back to the camera. He was hunched over a laptop, the blue light reflecting off the chrome toaster nearby. The video file on his screen suddenly glitched,
Elias froze. Slowly, his gaze drifted toward the corner of his kitchen where the humming fridge stood. Taped to the side of the appliance, just out of his normal line of sight, was a small, black lens he had never noticed before.
